To be eligible for admission, applicants must have successfully completed a minimum of 24 months, full-time, specialty education in Pediatric Dentistry at a recognized foreign institution.

This 13-month Advanced Education Program is designed to prepare internationally-educated pediatric dentists for the diverse specialty practice of pediatric dentistry and to qualify them for certification by the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry. Didactic instruction and clinical training develop skills necessary to comprehensively care for the dental needs of both the normal child and the physically, mentally, and emotionally handicapped child. Up to two students may be accepted into this program each year.

This program will provide a Certificate of Completion in Advanced Dental Education in Advanced Placement in Pediatric Dentistry.

All international students must secure an F1 visa prior to matriculation on July 1.

There is a required yearly tuition of $50,000. A limited stipend of $1,000 is available.

Application Process

The deadline to apply to this program is Friday, December 1, 2023.

We strongly encourage all applicants to have complete applications on file with UFCD prior to the deadline.

PASS Application Status Updates

All program applicants must apply through PASS (Postdoctoral Application Support Service), sponsored by the American Dental Education Association (www.adea.org). ADEA PASS is the centralized application service for applicants for advanced dental education programs.

  • Please be aware that it may take up to four weeks to process a PASS application.
    • Within two weeks of submitting your PASS application, you will receive a confirmation via email.
    • Within four weeks of submitting your PASS application, you will receive an email with your current application status and/or any remaining actions that you may need to take.
  • Applications that have met all requirements, including uploaded documents, will be forwarded to the program director for review.
  • Incomplete applications or those that do not meet all requirements will not be eligible for review.

2. Upload Documents to PASS Application (All Applicants)

All application documents that are listed below should be uploaded with the PASS application.

  • National Board Dental Examination (NBDE) Parts I and II or Integrated National Board Dental Examination (INBDE) score report
    • An official NBDE or INBDE score report submitted to ADEA PASS from the JCNDE is preferred.  If necessary, an unofficial NBDE or INBDE score report uploaded to PASS is sufficient at time of application. An official NBDE or INBDE score report sent directly to the University of Florida College of Dentistry is required after acceptance into the program (if applicable).
  • Official TOEFL Scores
    • A minimum TOEFL score of 80 (Internet-Based version) or 550 (paper-based) is required.
    • Please note that TOEFL scores expire after 2 years. For the 2024 Application Cycle, TOEFL scores must be dated February 8, 2022, or later.
    • For the TOEFL, scores must be from the same test date (the “MyBest Scores” are not accepted or considered).
    • The TOEFL ITP is not accepted for admission purposes.
  • Official Course-by-Course Evaluation Report

Recommended

  • A supplement to the official specialty training transcript – a description of the course content and educational goals for each of the didactic courses, clinical rotations and experiences provided in the curriculum
  • A portfolio of at least 2 clinical cases completed by the applicant (comprised of a comprehensive clinical examination, treatment plan, treatment progress notes, photographs, and radiographs of pre- and post- operative care)
  • If available, a manuscript copy of a mentored research project or a clinical case report completed during the applicant’s specialty training program

Matriculation Requirements (Upon Request Only)

1. Interview (Upon Invitation Only)

  • Selected candidates are required to participate in an interview at the College of Dentistry in Gainesville, Florida.
  • Interviews for the Advanced Placement in Pediatric Dentistry Program (Gainesville, FL) will be held in January.
  • The interview will be comprised of 4 sections.
    1. Written Exam: This exam will be a compilation of 100 multiple choice and short answer questions from the following first year UF pediatric dental residency courses: Pediatric Dental Core, Sedation, Growth & Development, Orthodontics, Oral Pathology, and Oral Medicine.
    2. Oral Exam: The candidate will be examined by 2 calibrated examiners and be required to demonstrate acceptable problem solving in 4 clinical cases given in accordance with the Department’s Mock Oral Examination policy and procedures administered to first year residents.
    3. Practical Exam: This examination will consist of a typodont-based examination where the applicant is required to show acceptable skills in basic clinical procedures in pediatric dentistry such as cavity preparations and restorations for proximal lesions in posterior primary teeth, pulpotomy and stainless steel crown on a posterior primary tooth, and a strip crown restoration on a maxillary primary incisor. The examination will be preceded with a voluntary two-hour practice session without feedback. Restorative procedures must be performed without identifiable critical errors.
    4. Personal Interview: A 30 minute personal interview with the applicant will be conducted by the Admission Committee.
  • A minimum passing grade of 80% correct is expected for the candidate to be eligible for a position in the program.

2. Provide Official Documents (Upon Request for Accepted Candidates)

For matriculation, the following documents must be on file with the University of Florida College of Dentistry:

  • All international students must secure an F1 visa prior to matriculation on July 1
  • Official electronic NBDE or INBDE score reports (if applicable)
  • Official TOEFL scores
    • The UF College of Dentistry code is 8612.
  • Official Course-by-Course Evaluation Report
    • Course-by-Course Evaluations must be sent directly to the University of Florida College of Dentistry in an envelope sealed by the evaluation service.
  • Original official dental school transcript(s) and diploma(s)
    • DDS/DMD degree equivalent(s)
  • Official specialty training (Pediatric Dentistry) transcript and diploma/certificate
    • From a two-year, full-time, postgraduate training program in Pediatric Dentistry at a recognized non-US institution
  • Official transcripts from every institution of higher learning that was attended
  • Official translations of all transcripts and diplomas (if the native language of the documents is not English)
    • Translations must be sent directly to the University of Florida College of Dentistry in an envelope sealed by the translation service.
